Acupuncture: What to Expect
Before Acupuncture
Dress comfortably; wear loose fitting clothing that has easy access to elbows and knees allowing for more acupuncture points to be used. Since acupuncture needles are retained for about 30 minutes it’s important you stay comfortable and are able to relax.
Please come to your appointment with something in your stomach, do not come on a completely empty stomach. Also, refrain from smoking an hour before or drinking alcohol at least several hours before your treatment.
*Try to arrive to your appointment 5-10 minutes early so you can fill out paperwork, relax, and not feel rushed.
Let the healing begin!
During your treatment; first and foremost make sure all electronic devices and distractions are off, insuring you have a relaxing more effective treatment. During needle insertion let your arms and legs completely relax, close your eyes and work on breathing, try not to move positions or lift limbs throughout your treatment.
Once needles are inserted they may be occasionally stimulated or turned, to properly direct the energy and blood flow to the right areas. You may feel some pressure, heaviness, or an electrical sensation for a temporary moment, after stimulation there should be no pain from the needles. If there is pain let the acupuncturist know and adjustments will be made. You can choose to listen to soft music or simply enjoy some quiet time to relax.
If you experience any discomfort, start to get cold or too warm during your treatment do not hesitate to ring the bell or call your acupuncturist into the treatment room to help. After all we want your acupuncture treatment to be comfortable and a healing experience.
After Acupuncture
After your treatment, take a few minutes to relax and breathe. Some patients feel a sense of euphoria after receiving acupuncture. Plan your schedule accordingly after your treatment as well so you are not running out the door and rushing your body into the next thing.
After your treatment your body will still be going through physiological re-balancing process. To maximize your acupuncture treatment; avoid vigorous exercise, alcohol, smoking, and hot tubs for a 1-2 hours after the treatment.
*It is also a good idea to take notes on the changes you feel and see throughout the week or simply on how you feel about your acupuncture treatment. Please don’t hesitate to ask any additional questions you may have!
